Obama hits out personally at Romney ads on ‘you didn’t build that’
In a new campaign ad, President Barack Obama hits
back personally at Republican charges that he thinks entrepreneurs don't
deserve credit for building their own businesses. Obama's direct-to-the-camera
appeal may be a sign that the latest onslaught from his opponents has rattled
reelection strategists in Chicago .
"Those ads taking my words about small
business out of context - they're flat out wrong," the president says in
the 31-second pitch. "Of course Americans build their own businesses.
Every day, hard-working people sacrifice to meet a payroll, create jobs and
make our economy run."
"And what I said was that we need to stand
behind them, as America always has, by investing in education and training,
roads and bridges research and technology," he says. "I'm Barack
Obama and I approve this message because I believe we're all in this together."
For days, Mitt Romney has led Republican attacks on
Obama over his defense of the role government plays in fostering a climate in
which entrepreneurs can thrive. At a July 13 campaign rally in Roanoke ,
Virginia , the president pointed to spending
on education and infrastructure like roads and bridges as well as "this
unbelievable American system" and declared "if you've got a
business—you didn't build that." Romney and the Republican National
Committee have used those words as ammunition to charge that Obama scorns
personal enterprise in favor of a government-knows-best approach.
The Republican ads take
Obama's words out of context. But the attacks seem potent at a time when
each candidate is trying to paint his opponent as out of touch—or worse—on the
issue that matters most to voters: the economy, which is still sputtering three
and a half years after Obama took office vowing to fix it.
The new Obama ad will air in pivotal battlegrounds Virginia ,
North Carolina , Florida ,
Ohio , Iowa
and Nevada , according to campaign
aides.
Team Obama has been hitting back at the Republican
accusations — with surrogates, with campaign videos and statements, on Twitter,
and even in the president's stump speech at a campaign event in Oakland ,
California , late Monday. So does that mean
the Republican attacks are working?
"I'm glad you asked," campaign
spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday. "We
are not going to stand by while Mitt Romney slices and dices and deliberately
takes out of context the President's remarks on businesses," she said.
OK, but are the attacks working?
"I think it's more that when you have a period
of time where our opponent, Mitt Romney, and his surrogates have tweaked and
taken apart to such a degree the President's remarks on an issue he's spoken
about many, many times, and Mitt Romney has made similar points, it was
important to us to ensure that people knew where the President was coming from,
how much he supports entrepreneurs and small business owners, and how their
records contrast," Psaki said.
So…is the president doing this himself because the
attacks are, you know, working?
"Well, look, I think the president is a pretty
effective communicator and an effective advocate for his policies," Psaki
said. "Entrepreneurs and small business owners, the people who run those
businesses on Main Streets across the country are the drivers of our economy.
He absolutely believes in that."
"It's, in fact, been a part of his stump
speech and his remarks for a very long period of time," she said.
But Romney's campaign isn't about to let this one
go. In a statement about the ad, Romney spokesman Ryan Williams told reporters:
"It's clear what President Obama believes because he told us: 'If you've
got a business -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen.' He
said it, and he meant it."

Small bomb punctured a hole in the side of a fuel tanker in Afghanistan and Killed dozens At least 10 Afghan civilians were killed and 35 wounded on a road near a major US base after a small bomb punctured a hole in the side of a fuel tanker that was later engulfed by a large blaze, eyewitnesses and officials said on Wednesday.
The tanker started leaking after the initial small blast on Tuesday night and people from nearby Rabat village, including children, rushed to collect some of the oil. Shortly after, the whole tanker went up in flames, an eyewitness said.
“I heard a small explosion and when I went outside, I saw a tanker was leaking fuel,” said Ajmal, a 35 year-old farmer whose house is close to the explosion.
“A few minutes later people came with buckets and jugs to collect fuel when suddenly everywhere was on fire,” he said.
Roshna Khalid, a spokeswoman for the provincial governor, said the bomb had been stuck to the side of the tanker with a magnet. There were 10 dead and 35 wounded in hospitals in Parwan province, north of Kabul, and in the capital, she said.
Five civilian cars and five motorcycles were burnt and the flames also singed trees in orchards near the road.
The Parwan governor blamed insurgents. “This was a terrorist attack and a magnet bomb was placed on a fuel tanker that exploded,” said Governor Abdul Basir Salangi.
The Taliban could not be reached immediately for comment. The tanker was about 3 km (2 miles) from Bagram Airfield, one of the largest military bases for NATO-led forces inAfghanistan, when it exploded.
Bagram, about 50 km (30 miles) north of Kabul, has a long history as a military base dating back to the Soviet era.
Afghan security forces have prevented at least two similar explosions near Bagram in the past three months, Khalid said.
Small explosive devices blasted holes in two tankers in Qarabagh district of Kabul province but security forces prevented people from approaching the vehicles to collect fuel, she said.
A fuel tanker fireball in 2009 was one of the deadliest single incidents of the war for Afghan civilians.
A US warplane summoned by German troops fired on hijacked trucks before dawn, killing as many as 90 people, many of them villagers siphoning off fuel.
NATO initially said it believed the casualties were all Taliban fighters, but later acknowledged that large numbers of wounded civilians were being treated in hospitals in the area
WAR IN AFGHANISTAN CAN NOT BE WON WITHOUT PAKISTAN HELP
“It’s been said a number of times that ultimately we can’t win the war in Afghanistan without being able to win in our relationship with Pakistan as well,” said Panetta.
The US Secretary of Defence is visiting Kabul to discuss the situation in Pakistan and to reaffirm America’s commitment to Afghanistan as Washington starts to withdraw combat troops and hand over security to Afghan forces.
“It’s going to be important, as we continue to move and progress in our efforts in Afghanistan, that we continue to outreach to Pakistan. This has been a difficult and complicated relationship but it is an important relationship.
Pakistan shut the US supply line into landlocked Afghanistan on November 26 after the Nato attack on a Pakistani check post that killed 25 Pakistani soldiers, saying that the blockade could last weeks longer, and forced Americans to leave the Shamsi air base.
US officials have accused Pakistan of supporting the Afghan Taliban and its Haqqani faction, whose leaders are based on Pakistani soil.
“They have provided cooperation in areas that have been important to us and at the same time we’ve had some serious difficulties with regards to the operations that involve groups in the Fata (Pakistan’s tribal belt) and groups along the border.”
Pakistan called the November 26 attack deliberate. US commanders deny it was intentional. US investigators are due to submit a report on December 23.
“In the end Pakistan and the US do share the same concerns with regards to terrorism,” said Panetta.
Afghanistan and the US troops’ withdrawal
The Pentagon chief says that violence is falling in Afghanistan, where the US has been at war with the Taliban for 10 years.
“I think 2011 will mark a turning point with regards with the efforts to Afghanistan,” Panetta told journalists on the flight to Kabul.
“Troops have been able to reduce the levels of violence there. They are successful in securing some of the key areas in Afghanistan. There’s greater success in the Afghan military and police.”
The US has announced the withdrawal of 10,000 of its 100,000 troops by the end of the year, while 23,000 others will leave the country by the end of September 2012 after the summer “fighting season”.
The number corresponds to the 33,000 “surge” troops ordered in by President Barack Obama in late 2009 in a bid to reverse the Taliban insurgency, defeat al Qaeda and quicken an end to the war.
Recent media reports, not denied by the Pentagon, say the focus of the US mission is turning increasingly to building up the Afghan army to take on more responsibility in the fight against the Taliban.
Panetta welcomed the “significant achievement” of a second phase of transition from Nato to Afghan security control, which was launched this month in conjunction with the planned exit of all Nato combat troops in 2014.
In the second wave, Afghan forces will take charge of six provinces, seven provincial capitals and more than 40 districts, including three in the southern province of Helmand, one of most deadly in the conflict.
More than half of Afghans live in an area included in either the first or second phase of transition, according to Karzai.
“That of course requires greater and greater efforts by the ANSF (Afghan National Security Forces) as they’re moving to the lead,” a senior US defence official said, speaking anonymously.
During his two-day visit, the former CIA director will also meet General John Allen, the US commander in Afghanistan, troops and US embassy staff.
The Pentagon chief, who made a brief stop in Djibouti before arriving in Kabul, will next travel to Iraq, Turkey and Libya

ASTANA – Kazakhstan, behind a call from President Nursultan Nazarbayev, is stepping up its anti-terror efforts, following recent acts of violence.
“There is a growing risk of interethnic and interreligious conflict. The threat of a new onslaught of international terrorism remains high,” Nazarbayev told parliament September 1.
He reminded parliament of an upcoming bill on religious activities and urged its passage. The bill’s main requirements are re-registration of all religious organisations, banning of the practise of naming mosques after those who funded them, and analysis of what every religious group is teaching.
Nazarbayev also called for dealing with illegal mosques.
This is the first time terror concerns have come from such a high level, analyst Yegor Vasilyev said.

Beck said that the Labour party youth camp on the island, where 68 people were murdered, bore "disturbing" similarities to the Nazi party's notorious juvenile wing.
Beck, a multimillionaire darling of the Tea Party movement, said on his nationally-syndicated radio show: "There was a shooting at a political camp, which sounds a little like, you know, the Hitler youth. I mean, who does a camp for kids that's all about politics? Disturbing."
Torbjørn Eriksen, a former press secretary to Jens Stoltenberg,Norway's prime minister, described the comment as "a new low" for the broadcaster, who has frequently been forced to apologise for offensive remarks.
"Young political activists have gathered at Utoya for over 60 years to learn about and be part of democracy, the very opposite of what the Hitler Youth was about," he told The Daily Telegraph. "Glenn Beck's comments are ignorant, incorrect and extremely hurtful."
The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, a Washington-based campaign group, said the remark by Beck, a free agent after being forced out of the Fox News channel earlier this year, was "absolutely disgusting"
